And why not?
Apart from the connection with the natural world, the name "Iolaire" is etched on the psyche of islanders. It is associated with one of the saddest episodes in the history of the island. On New Year's night at the end of the First World War the menfolk of the island were returning home after the long campaign in Europe. A naval yacht named HMS Iolaire was dispatched to help take the men home from the mainland. But she, and they, never made it. The vessel hit rocks within sight of Stornoway harbour, where a large crowd had gathered awaiting her arrival. Over 200 men drowned, ensuring the name "Iolaire" lives long in the history of Lewis and Harris (find out more).
